About this ebook

The Riveting Story of the Reformation and Its Significance Today

The Reformation unfolded in the cathedrals and town squares of Europe--in Wittenberg, Worms, Rome, Geneva, and Zurich--and it is a stirring story of courage and cowardice, of betrayal and faith.

The story begins with the Catholic Church and its desperate need for reform. The dramatic events that followed are traced from John Wycliffe in England, to the burning of John Hus at the stake in Prague, to the rampant sale of indulgences in the cities and towns of Germany, to Martin Luther nailing the Ninety-Five Theses to the door of the Castle Church in 1517, to John Calvin's reform of Geneva.

Erwin Lutzer captures the people, places, and big ideas that fueled the Reformation and explains its lasting influence on the church and Western Civilization.

Dr. Lutzer is one of my favorite preachers and I hope one day to meet him. He has done a great job with this book. The history of the Reformation is covered in its context because it cannot be judged by twenty-first century standards. But it can be -- and is -- held to biblical standards. Dr. Lutzer shows the reader the causes and the need for the Reformation and how it rescued the Gospel of Jesus Christ and still needs to be used for the very same purpose today. The one thing I did not like was when he would mention a deeper theological or historical issue but not have the space to fully address it. I must agree with him that he was limited in scope due to space. To rectify that, perhaps a second volume (or more) is needed. I highly recommend this book for pastors, students, and any Christian who wants to know the whys and hows of the Reformation as well as its influence.
