About this ebook

Retired from his fighting days, John Perry is now village ombudsman for a human colony on distant Huckleberry. With his wife, former Special Forces warrior Jane Sagan, he farms several acres, adjudicates local disputes, and enjoys watching his adopted daughter grow up.

That is, until his and Jane's past reaches out to bring them back into the game--as leaders of a new human colony, to be peopled by settlers from all the major human worlds, for a deep political purpose that will put Perry and Sagan back in the thick of interstellar politics, betrayal, and war.

Overall I really enjoyed this story. It wraps up some big questions and themes from the first two books and uses many story elements in interesting ways. Some of the dialogue is a little stiff. I didn't notice until I read some of it out loud, but I suppose the main characters are military types. However, the strategic and political games are pretty great.

Good story, and nice to read, but not as good as the second book. Some of the dialogues are stiff or make no sense. There is also substantial shift in character of John. And how is it that all alien races are so similar, even in psychology. Where is the ingenious differentiation of alien races known from previous parts? The last one for me, as much as the design of political game plots is great, battle descriptions are just awful in this part.

I really enjoyed this series, and am at a loss why some reviewers enjoyed each book a little less. I had the opposite reaction. Mr. Scalzi does a great job with all of his endeavors and I look forward to reading many more of his efforts!
