Opening the pages of Never Saw Me Coming by Vera Kurian, the reader is already primed to mistrust the narrator. Chloe admits that her primary motive is revenge, and she will leverage her diagnosed psychopathy to fulfill her goal. She is part of a secret experiment at her college, one of seven anonymous psychopaths who have been given a full scholarship in exchange for participating. It is no coincidence that the school happens to be attended by Chloe’s object of punishment.

This was a stellar read; brilliantly paced, cunningly plotted, and breathtakingly insightful. The storylines were deftly penned and perceptively written from multiple points of view and I was quickly pulled into an oddly compelling and somewhat disturbing vortex of devious scheming, emotive story threads, keenly clever snark, and shrewdly detailed observations and inner musings. I was intrigued, perplexed, enthralled, and riveted during perusal and cringed with annoyance when my reading was interrupted, as I didn’t want to miss a thing. Vera Kurian may well be an evil genius as well as a master storyteller and has titled her book with 100% accuracy, as I never would have foreseen this ending on the horizon.

This book was a fun and exciting thriller. What's not to like about "psychopaths" playing cat and mouse. The lack of feeling empathy brings a nice touch to the story. Somebody is murdering the psychopath study participants. Can they be caught before the entire group is wiped out?
About the author
Vera Kurian is a writer and scientist. Her short fiction has been published in magazines such as Glimmer Train, Day One and The Pinch. She’s lived in DC for most of her adult life and has a PhD in social psychology. Never Saw Me Coming is her first novel.
