Hurricane Wars read like a sixteen year old's idea for a Shadow and Bone knock-off turned reality. I deign not to reveal to many spoilers, but for all I have to say, this book was a general disappointment, especially as a Filipino myself who was eager to see my culture represented in the mainstream literary scene. All stakes presented within the plot were virtually negated by all the snarky and sardonic dialogue the characters had with each other. The protagonist was bordering on if not within the Mary Sue archetype of being too well-rounded; measuring up to the main antagonistic figure of the book within the first few chapters and being somewhat confident in her abilities to "save her nation." Despite all of this and the odd "evil minions" being sent to stop her one-by-one in the middle portions of the plot, the writing improves the more it unfolds. Hurricane Wars is far from a masterpiece, but it is a decent debut for the author, all things considered. Read it if you're bored.
