I first read this book when I, like Aubrey, was around 11 or 12 years old. At the time, although my parents were both still alive, my relationship with them was extremely inconsistent and I also had to live with my grandparent, or in my case grandparents, far away from everything I knew as home. Aubreys sense of loss and abandonment, and of anger and sadness and fear, resonated with me.
