New York Times Readers Pick: 100 Best Books of the 21st Century

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: San Francisco Chronicle, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, The Chicago Tribune, HuffPost, Newsday

This book was absolutely fantastic, however not her best in my opinion. I have been a fan of Gillian Flynn since her first novel, Sharp Objects and have read all of her books. She is actually one of my favorite writers. Everything she writes is fresh and original and most importantly absolutely dark and at times creepy. That being said, this is probably my least favorite only because her others are THAT good. So, yes I highly recommend this book. But I really recommend reading her others as well.

This story had various elements of mystery and suspense that helped the story along greatly, but at a certain point it sort of got away from me. There seems to be a massive build up throughout the entire story through a series of cliffhangers, and it is addictive. As a result I tore through this book in a day and did not feel better for it. Overall I felt the ending to be dissatisfying, not because of whether one would constitute it as a happy or sad ending for the protagonist, but because every twist of fate just works out for the primary antagonist. The only growth is through by the protagonist while the antagonist remains a horrid person.

i bought it because i heard so many amazing things about it. i am so sorry i bought it. i couldn't even get through the first chapter. the agonizingly dramatic over-descriptive writing about absolutely nothing made it impossible. i swear, every sentence is three lines long, at least, and some are as long as seven lines. and they just go on and on. i believe i will try watching the movie instead because the book is just unbearable.
