About this ebook

Reading the Old Testament is a clear and carefully organized introduction for contemporary readers. It is designed to guide the student of the Bible through the text and its problems, enrich their understanding of the individual biblical books, and explore the way the Bible came to be written. Reading the Old Testament combines the latest scholarship with sensitivity to religious issues and Israel's ever deepening understanding of God's ways. The author gives special attention to recent archeological discoveries in the Middle East and how these affect our understanding of the Old Testament. The book contains numerous maps, charts, and drawings. Reading the Old Testament is particularly illuminating about the way Israel's religious experience was translated into written records. No other introduction offers the same thorough treatment of the Exile and the post-exilic periods as crucial times in the formation of the Old Testament. +

It's alright. There is a lot of informative information in there, but in many cases Boadt is just trying to disprove that the first five books of the Bible were written by Moses, and then tries to take credit away from Isaiah as well. It's called JEDP Theory, and it's a big lie that tries to sap away the supernatural power of the Holy Bible. It's very sneaky in its approach. He never makes mention of Jesus' quotes in the New Testament that attests to Moses writing the first five books of the Bible, Isaiah not having multiple authors, etc. So it is trying to use a backdoor approach to also sap the authority of Christ's Words. It's worth a read, but just be careful. And look up both sides of the argument for JEDP Theory and you'll see how faulty that theory is. God bless!

This is the First edition (1984 & 1998). The Second edition (2012) is out in paperback and is a lightly revised version according to the editors. The Second edition contains: expanded lists of texts, some dated material deleted, abridged occasionally, sentences added to reflect scholarly developments, clarified text occasionally, checked for inclusive language, updated study questions and bibliography.
