21st Century Houses is the latest title from Image Publications, who specialise in glossy coffee-table books of houses most people can only dream about. It doesn't disappoint, and the range and quality of the houses here are as beautiful, challenging and imaginative as those in past titles - 100 of the World's Best Houses, to name just one. Each house comes with a write-up from the architect, which provides a perceptive and insider view of what lies behind each of the designs. What really impressed me about this book was the variety and spread of the houses on offer - there are examples from every continent, and in a plethora of styles, all unified by their modern, twenty-first century character. I was really impressed to see houses in Indonesia, for example - normally off the radar in this kind of book! This is more than can be said for many rivals, who focus too heavily on the US and English-speaking world, to the detriment of Europe and Asia... At under $30, this case-bound volume would make an ideal Christmas present, or indeed an addition to your own coffee table or bookshelf.
