charles stross is an amazing author who will consistently impress you with his intelligence and cynical insight into society and all microcosms thereof. Dead lies dreaming departs from prior tales in the laundry files universe in that the narrative shifts from the perspective of hard working under-appreciated members of the public service to members of the general public (the newfound plucky underdogs) thrown in over their heads in the private sector feeding frenzy that followed the dissolution of the conventional goverment. See the logical consequences of a world with the doors thrown open to cthonic influences in a thorougly fleshed out spinoff series by Charles Stross. I heartily look forward to the sequel.
