This is a beautifully written book. No doubt it is a difficult subject, and it is not easy to write about family secrets, but Helen Fremont has done an amazing job of turning this into a compelling story. I couldn’t stop reading as the book just took hold of me. Fremont is a superb storyteller and the book is so well-crafted that, despite the painful events, it is quite a satisfying read. It is a real triumph of honesty and bravery. Her first book, After Long Silence, is also a page turner that I highly recommend.
About the author
In addition to The Escape Artist, Helen Fremont is the author of the national bestseller After Long Silence. Her works of fiction and nonfiction have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, including Prize Stories: The O. Henry Awards, Ploughshares, and The Harvard Review. A graduate of the Warren Wilson MFA Program for Writers, she has been a teaching fellow at both Bread Loaf and the Radcliffe Institute.
