Like many readers interested in space, I have read much about Apollo but not the shuttle. This book highlights NASA's fantastic achievements that culminated in this first mission. It follows the stories of those who missed Apollo flights and went on to be the mainstay of the shuttle era. Finally, it shows how dangerous spaceflight is, even when the world thinks it has become routine. A great read.

Beautifully written! I can't put it down. Detailed enough to keep a nerd engaged and interested, but with humour and flow that makes it a real joy to read. Anyone interested in anything 'space', will love it. My favourite space read yet..

Rowland White is the author of five critically acclaimed works of aviation history: Vulcan 607, Phoenix Squadron, Storm Front, Into the Black, and most recently Harrier 809, as well as a compendium of aviation, The Big Book of Flight. Born and brought up in Cambridge, he studied Modern History at Liverpool University.
