Eine Gruppe Reisender ist um das Jahr 1940 per Schiff von New York nach Buenos Aires unterwegs. Unter ihnen befindet sich auch der Schachweltmeister Czentovic. Einige Mitreisende fordern ihn zu einer Schachpartie heraus, die Czentovic ohne Anstrengung gewinnt. Erst als ein gewisser Dr. B. gegen ihn antritt, wendet sich das Blatt. Die Schachkünste dieses Herrn haben jedoch eine düstere Vorgeschichte, die im Lauf der Novelle aufgedeckt wird. Am Ende werden die Figuren erneut aufgestellt, und eine letzte dramatische Partie nimmt ihren Lauf.

Stefan Zweig, geboren am 28. November 1881 in Wien; gestorben am 23. Februar 1942 in Petrópolis, war ein österreichischer Schriftsteller. Zweigs uvre umfasst vornehmlich Schriften in Prosa und darunter zahlreiche Novellen sowie historische Erzählungen.
