Another terrific novel in this wonderful series! Now that war has been declared, Britain is busy getting prepared and Alice, Marg and Edith are all considering which way they can best ‘do their bit’. Fearful of what this means for their families, each one is hoping and praying for the safety of everyone they know. Marg is about to marry, Edith is embarking upon her teaching career and Alice? Alice decides to join the Red Cross and do whatever she can to help. Will they manage to protect their own and come through this war unscathed? Right from the beginning this has been a realistic and thoroughly enjoyable series, putting the reader right back in time to the war years, and giving an appreciation of how horrifically the declaration of war affected ordinary families. This is a story which will have you reaching for tissues more than once – I certainly did. Unable to put it down, I read on well into the early hours and I really appreciated the epilogue which tied everything up nicely, leaving no unanswered questions to float around in my head. With well developed characters this is a heartwarming read; beautifully written, as always by this author, it is a complete stand-alone read but is greatly enhanced by reading the two preceding books. A fabulous read and one I greatly enjoyed. Highly recommended and absolutely worth all five sparkling stars!
