Trigger warning: This book includes scenes involving physical abuse do not read if this is a trigger for you. As Ms. Greenwood states in her introductory to this book she does not romanticize the abuse that is committed. I saw this as more of a story of hope and re-birth than defeat and self-pity. It begins with Maribelle being offered on the Marriage Market which is more of an auction. Her family is almost destitute, and this is the only way that she can think to get the money to help them. She is purchased by a man named Jacob and becomes his second wife on paper. During their first year of marriage, Maribelle becomes the victim of abuse and soon comes to the conclusion that Jacob probably killed his first wife. Although, she doesn't see much of a way out, Maribelle has not given up hope and help just might come from someplace she never considered. This book shows the downfall of the Marriage Market. Maribelle entered the marriage for a better life. She met and married Jacob. He is less than stellar and cruel to her. She is alone and afraid for her life. But she finds support from friends that give her the courage to escape the chains. Laura has found a way to take a serious subject matter and turn into a story with a twist. You will be disgusted with the auction for a wife and the trials that Maribelle faces. We never know what a marriage entails. Be it true love, arranged marriage, or in this case, Marriage Auctions. This standalone from the Dragon Duels Universe hits this subject head on. It was hard to read a little, but I know it was nothing compared to how hard it was for Laura to write it. I have never been in a situation like this and I AM grateful for that, but I know it happens, and it needs to be brought into the open. I always enjoy Laura’s storytelling, hard subject or not.
