I prefer Malinda Lo's other books, but this is still a good book. Plot - 4/5 Atmosphere - 4/5 Characters - protagonist and love interest were relatable and really interesting, 4/5. Side characters were less complex but still interesting - 3/5. Pros: well researched. Lovely language. Realistic characters. Thoughtful observations on racism against poc and homophobia against lesbians. I just wanted to add: I know the protagonist is keen on entering university and that's cool. But there's nothing wrong with not going to university. Plenty of people who don't go to university earn enough through trades to support themselves, are happy and intelligent. Not going to college doesn't make you less smarter or less capable than other people.

Malinda Lo is the critically acclaimed author of several young adult novels, including most recently A Line in the Dark, which was a Kirkus Best YA Book of 2017 and Ash, a lesbian retelling of Cinderella, which was a finalist for the William C. Morris YA Debut Award, the Andre Norton Award for YA Science Fiction and Fantasy, the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award, and was a Kirkus Best Book for Children and Teens. Malinda's nonfiction has been published by the New York Times Book Review, the Huffington Post, the Horn Book, and the anthologies Here We Are, How I Resist, and Scratch. She lives in Massachusetts with her wife.
