“We were as brothers,” William Tecumseh Sherman said, describing his relationship to Ulysses S. Grant. They were incontestably two of the most important figures in the Civil War, but until now there has been no book about their victorious partnership and the deep friendship that made it possible.
They were prewar failures: Grant was forced to resign from the Regular Army because of his drinking, and Sherman had moved from one job to the next in the years before the conflict. A great read for both advanced and novice readers of the Civil War. It details the interaction between two of the best generals the world has ever seen. It starts with their early interactions of West Point and the Mexican War and culminates in the Grand Review in Washington after the war. The postscript of the lives of Grant and Sherman is rushed, but after 400 pages, you're somewhat glad it's short- there's been so much you've read, it's nice to see a quick ending. Highly recommended! One of the better modern works about the Civil War that is both comprehensive and easy to consume.
