The Grapes of Wrath

As a modern classic I was disappointed. the book is well written but some lovely sections but the effect was destroyed by the interleaving of non story chapters which could have been covered in a few paragraphs even though they were well written. I think the book tires too hard. For me this book with its emotive subject did not elicit an emotional response yet many other books, less well written and on less Important subjects have.

Harrowing tale of migrant workers in American early 20th century. Deals powerfully with themes such as income inequality, societal injustices, racism and xenophobia. An important book to educate oneself about the plight of impoverished workers and the need for strong government policies to ensure equality and fairness in society.

Excellent account, though fictional, about the Great Depression and it's effects. Written in 1939, the year the world war started, this book has the perfect dark aura, a clear reflection of the period. Steinbeck's presentation makes the masterpiece even more commendable. A highly recommended read :-)
