For me I found this book a little hard going. Still great writing but not enough space opera for me to enjoy as much as the other book in the culture series. However I would still recommend this book. For me Banks style of writing is very accessible.

With Culture, Ian M Banks shows us how a resource based economy would be so
much better than our market based one. He'll be missed.

Of all his books I found this to be the best, just enough space opera to satisfy without going overboard and a nice character developing story mixed in.
About the author
Iain Banks (1954-2013) came to widespread and controversial public notice with the publication of his first novel, The Wasp Factory, in 1984. Consider Phlebas, his first science fiction novel, was published under the name Iain M. Banks in 1987 and began his celebrated ten-book Culture series. He is acclaimed as one of the most powerful, innovative and exciting writers of his generation.
