“Las Fenicias” datada hacia el año 410 a.C. es la tragedia de Eurípides basada en una parte del Ciclo Tebano. Yocasta, madre de Edipo, se había casado con él sin saber su parentesco y fue por ello madre de Eteocles, Polinices, Ismene y Antígona. Al conocer el parentesco, Edipo, que se había convertido en rey de Tebas, se había cegado a sí mismo y sus hijos lo habían encerrado, motivo por el que lanzó contra ellos la maldición de que se repartirían el reino mediante afilado hierro.
