About the author

Edgar Allan Poe was an American poet, short story writer, editor, and literary critic. He is best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, as well as his poem 'The Raven' and his detective fiction. Poe was born in 1809 and was orphaned at a young age. He was educated at the University of Virginia and the United States Military Academy at West Point. He began writing fiction in his twenties and his first book, Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque, was published in 1840. He wrote dozens of stories, poems, and essays, as well as editing and publishing several magazines. Poe was a celebrated literary figure of his era, and is now recognized as a major figure in American literature. He died in 1849.
