This book engages a multidisciplinary approach to understand Gandhi in addressing specific contemporary societal issues. The issues highlighted in the book through thirteen distinct, yet interrelated, themes offer solutions to the societal challenges through the prism of Gandhian thought process. This edited book explores how ideas Gandhi expressed over a century ago can be applied today to issues from the UN's Sustainable Development Goals to peaceful resolution of conflicts. In particular, it looks at the contemporary societies' critical issues and offers solutions through the prism of Gandhian ideas. Written in an accessible style, this book reintroduces Gandhi to today's audiences in relevant terms.

About the author

Anshuman Behera is Associate Professor in Conflict Resolution and Peace Research Programme at NIAS, Bengaluru. He earned a Doctorate Degree in Political Science, University of Hyderabad, Telengana. He has co-edited a book on ‘Reasoning Indian Politics’ published by Routledge in 2018 and co-authored a book on ‘Militant Groups in South Asia’ published by Pentagon Press and IDSA in 2014. His research interests include social–political conflicts and conflict resolution, political processes in South Asia and political theory.
Shailesh Nayak is Director of National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bengaluru, and Chancellor of TERI Institute of Advanced Studies, New Delhi. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Geology from the M.S University of Baroda in 1980. Being Former Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, and Chair, Earth System Science Organisation (ESSO) during 2008–2015, he had set up the state-of-the-art tsunami warning system for the Indian Ocean and developed marine services. He was conferred the ISC Vikram Sarabhai Memorial Award—2012.
