About this ebook

Born in a workhouse in the eighteenth-century England, Oliver Twist, the novel’s orphaned protagonist, spends first nine years of his life facing constant humiliation, mistreatment, and malnourishment. Yet everything changes after he flees to London, embarking on a risky adventure that will introduce him to a group of juvenile thieves, lead him to both his allies and his enemies, and, eventually, show him the truth about his roots. Now even more entertaining in this exclusive illustrated edition. Charles Dickens’s second major work, Oliver Twist is not merely a children’s story. This is a social novel, in which the author satirizes the society of his time. Oliver Twist sheds light on the dark consequences of the industrialism, such as the creation of the poorly managed workhouses and widely practised child labour.

Charles Dickens - Oliver Twist; Or, The Parish Boy's Progress (Illustrated) (1838) (Notes: *Antiquated/pejorative language regarding race/ethnicity throughout *Errors in the text possibly due to OCR: misspelled words; quotation marks are sometimes missing; capital letters in the middle of a word; often new paragraphs begin in the middle of sentences, usually between a title (Mr., Mrs., etc.) & name; some instances of hyphens/dashes replaced by the underscore symbol (_); & hyphens/dashes are used instead of em dashes (long dashes) with no space between hyphens & words. In sentences containing hyphenated words as well as parenthetical information which would usually have an em dash, the exclusive use of hyphens without spacing leads to a string of words broken up only by hyphens, which is disruptive to the flow of the text.)
