About the author

Instead of rewriting the traditional folktales, the brothers set down stories as a cultural treasure, a kind of sociology of literature. The Grimm brothers set the standard for folklore studies. They were linguists as well as folklorists. They published a German dictionary, and studied how the sounds in words changed over time.

They were born in the 1780s near Frankfurt, in Germany. In 1796, their father died of pneumonia, burdening the family with poverty.  For financial help, their mother turned to her sister, the first lady-in-waiting at the court of Prince Frederick of Hesse. As the Grimm brothers grew older without a male provider,  they were forced by circumstances to rely on each other. The Brothers Grimm remained close friends throughout their lives.
