About this ebook

The Controversies of Modern Christianity:

Where Do You Stand?

Cracks in the Foundation: Controversies in Christianity presents fresh insight on the hottest topics in modern religious debate, such as Biblical Creation versus scientific evidence, and evil and suffering in God’s world, as well as other issues.

Many of today’s Christians struggle with issues rising from the Bible’s relation to modern science, from rational thought, and from mixed messages within the Bible itself. The Bible, if read literally, says God created heaven and earth 6000 years ago, and created humanity on the sixth day. But modern science says the universe came into being 14 billion years ago, and humanity evolved over millions of years from lower life forms. Others struggle with the prevalence of evil in God’s world, and with contradictory biblical statements concerning predestination versus free will.

Contradictions like these pose problems for people who think carefully about their beliefs. Indeed many younger people are now looking elsewhere for answers, and the number of Americans professing Christianity has recently dropped from 78% to 70%. However, thoughtful and inquisitive believers can now find an extremely valuable resource in Cracks in the Foundation. This book presents a wealth of fresh insights and perspectives on twelve of the hottest topics in modern Christian debate. A central theme is that many of the apparent contradictions are not as severe as they appear. We find in many cases that Bible, science, and rational thought are amenable to reconciliation and even mutual enrichment.

About the author

Dr Stephen Howe is a retired aerospace engineer who has devoted the past nine years to full-time studies and writing in Christian theology. In 2012, he won the Christian Choice Book Award for his first book, Belief in the Face of Doubt. His in-depth exploration of fundamental questions about God, Jesus, and Scripture drew insights from all eras of Christian thought. Now, in Cracks in the Foundation, he applies the same basic approach to controversial topics in Christianity, citing extensively from modern theologians, as well as leading scientists in astrophysics, paleontology, and genetics.
