About this ebook

The searing follow-up to 2018’s most celebrated fantasy debut – THE POPPY WAR.

Rin is on the run...

Haunted by the atrocity she committed to save her people, addicted to opium, and driven by the murderous commands of Phoenix, the vengeful god who has blessed Rin with her fearsome power.

Rin’s only reason for living is to get revenge on the traitorous Empress who sold her homeland, Nikan, to her enemies.

With no other options, Rin joins forces with the powerful Dragon Warlord, who has a plan to conquer Nikan, unseat the Empress, and create a new Republic. She throws herself into his war.

After all, making war is all she knows how to do...

The plot makes little sense given how Rin was portrayed in the first book - somehow she devolved from a cunning, clever rebel to a whiny guttermouthed brat yearningfor a father figure - which detracted from the quality of the writing overall. The first book had such complex characterisation; sad to see them become archetypes playing parts in the narrative rather than driving the plot.

Loved the first book then Rin became an unbearable p.o.s. I'm not one to slam a book or a series but I would have disliked Rin even if she hadn't transitioned from a phenomenal character to a broken pathetic thing that left me wondering when I was going to call it quits. I understand that torture will break people but I don't want to spend hundreds of pages listening to her pathetic desperate pity party. I literally lept for joy when someone finally told her to grow the hell up and stopped tiptoeing around her, it certainly helped but didn't fix things. Lots of people enjoyed the whole book I felt Rin's depression ruined the story for me if I'm totally honest.
