भारत में किन्नरों का भी एक 'गोल्डन एरा' यानी कि स्वर्णकाल था। दरअसल किन्नरों को मुग़ल साम्राज्य में सबसे पहले अहमियत दी गयी थी। किन्नरों को महिलाओं के हरम की रक्षा की ज़िम्मेदारी दी जाती थी। मुग़ल साम्राज्य का मानना था कि किन्नर हमारे समाज का एक अहम हिस्सा हैं और इसलिए उन्हें इतनी बड़ी ज़िम्मेदारी सौंपी गयी। यह भी समझा जाता था कि महिलाओं को किन्नरों से किसी प्रकार का कोई ख़तरा नहीं था। किन्नर उनकी कई सेनाओं के जनरल भी थे तो कई रानियों के पर्सनल बॉडीगार्ड भी। भारत में किन्नरों की स्थिति यूरोप के किन्नरों से एकदम अलग थी, और है। भारत में किन्नरों का अलग मोहल्ला होता है जहाँ किन्नर एक साथ रहते हैं। किन्नर एक मामले में सबसे अलग हैं क्योंकि वे घरों में तभी आते हैं जब बेटा पैदा हो या फिर घर में नयी बहू आये। यानी कि किन्नर आपकी ख़ुशियों के साथी हैं। ग़म में कहीं दिखाई नहीं देते।
