E. Fred Schubert

E. Fred Schubert received his Ph.D. degree with Honors in Electrical Engineering from University of Stuttgart in 1986 and is currently the Wellfleet Senior Constellation Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He has made pioneering contributions to the fields of microelectronics, optoelectronics, photonics, and lighting. He has authored or co-authored more than 300 publications including the books “Doping in III–V Semiconductors” (published in 1993), for which he was awarded the VDE Literature Prize, and the first and second edition of the book “Light Emitting Diodes” (published in 2003 and 2006, respectively). He is inventor or co-inventor of more than 30 US Patents and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the American Physical Society (APS), the Optical Society of America (OSA), and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE). He received several awards including the Senior Research Award of the Humboldt Foundation, the Discover Award for Technological Innovation, the RD 100 Award, the Boston University’s Provost Innovation Fund Award, the Scientific American 50 Award, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Trustee Faculty Achievement Award, and the 25 Most Innovative Micro- and Nano-Products of 2007 Award.
