विचारों में डूबे हुए गुरुचरण बाबू एकांत कमरे में बैठे थे। उनकी छोटी पुत्री ने आकर कहा; ‘‘बाबू! बाबू! माँ ने एक नन्ही सी बच्ची को जन्म दिया है।’’ यह शुभ समाचार गुरुचरण बाबू के हृदय में तीर की भाँति समा गया; उसका चेहरा ऐसा सूख गया; मानो कोई बड़ा भारी अनिष्ट हो गया हो! यह पाँचवीं कन्या थी; जो बिना किसी बाधा के उत्पन्न हुई थी।
गुरुचरण बाबू एक साधारण आदमी थे। वह केवल साठ रुपए मासिक वेतन के नौकर थे। उनकी दशा शोचनीय थी; जीवन शुष्क तथा नेत्रों में निराशा की झलक थी। शरीर दुर्बल; मरियल; टट्टू की भाँति था। देखने में ऐसा लगता था कि जान होते हुए भी बेजान हों। फिर ऐसी दशा में यह अशुभ समाचार सुनते ही उनका खून ही सूख गया और हाथ में हुक्का लिये हुए निर्जीव की भाँति; फटे-पुराने तकिए के सहारे लेट रहे। जान पड़ता है कि साँस लेने में भी उन्हें कष्ट हो रहा था।
अन्नाकाली से यह शुभ समाचार सुनकर भी गुरुचरण बाबू कुछ नहीं बोले तो थोड़ी देर बाद वह उन्हें हिलाकर फिर कहने लगी; ‘‘बाबूजी; मुन्नी को देखने न चलोगे?’’
