BpNichol

Barrie Philip Nichol (1944-2018), commonly known as bpNichol, was an influential Canadian poet, sound poet, editor and publisher. Nichol came to prominence through his concrete poetry work in the 1960s, and he was an active collaborator with other experimental poets in Vancouver and Toronto throughout his life. His interest in publishing and collaboration was reflected in his co-founding of Ganglia Press with David Aylward and grOnk with Bill Bissett and David UU; he also helped establish Underwhich Editions in 1977. Nichol is perhaps best known for his multi-volume lyrical poem, "The Martyrology," and for his 1984 digital poem, "First Screening," one of the first poetic works intended to be read on a personal computer. Beyond his poetic work, Nichol was a writer for the Jim Henson-produced television show "Fraggle Rock."
