Armada: A Novel

great book everyone us talking about how he wants it to be a movie doesn't every author want that he pulls you in great character building cute little love spots like in ready player one loved the book will say a lot of character building up till chapter 8 but over all good

I thoroughly enjoying the "Ready Player One" audio book and I wanted to see if there was another book by Ernest Cline (or was it really Wil Wheaton's excellent performance I was after?) No matter, Armada had both of these powerhouses together again for a whole new adventure. I recall that it took a little time until I got totally sucked in. Maybe it was because I was fresh off of "Ready Player One" and I had to learn a whole new world? It didn't take long though because once I was in,I was in. As the story unfolded, it continued to get better and better all the way through to the end. The characters were excellent and you really care about them. The events are so vivid I feel like I've already seen the movie. Ernest Cline has a knack for tying in real-world events into his fictional stories in a way that's totally believable. I walked away looking at the world I grew up in, in a totally different way. As good as the story was, I think that what sealed the deal for me was Wil Wheaton's incredible performance. He's was outstanding both in Armada and in Ready Player One, and he should not be underestimated. it never felt that he was sitting with the book at a microphone, reading somebody else's story to me. Instead, I felt as though he was looking right at me, and telling me this unbelievable story that happened to HIM. It had passion, emotion and when he talks, you believe what he is saying to be true. Even the voices he did for some of the characters were excellent. Wil Wheaton really brings so much to the table and I'm glad that I listened to the audiobook rather than read this one myself.

Absolute garbage. I doubt I've ever been as disappointed by a novel. The real shame is that I loved Ready Player One. This one, however, was a complete miss. It's cringy in the extreme. I literally winced at every other sentence. The plot is highly derivative of other, more well executed masterpieces such as The Day the Earth Stood Still and Ender's Game to name a few. I guess Cline believes if he references these works then it's okay. The ridiculous dialogue and obnoxious level of willingness to self-sacrifice by every character at every instance is so ubiquitous as to become grating. I wonder if Cline has actually met other human beings before. He writes people as cliched and one-dimensional Caricatures of bad archetypes of people. While the ending was somewhat fulfilling it just does not make up for the rest of the novel. Just skip it unless you like terrible writing.
