Beneath The Floorboards

John Smith's family had just inherited their great Uncle Henry's farm and Victorian home, a sprawling, gothic mansion that loomed over the rolling hills like a brooding specter. As their car wound up the overgrown driveway, Karen, the eldest Smith child, felt an inexplicable chill run down her spine. The house seemed to watch them approach, its many windows like hollow, accusatory eyes.

They were unaware of its horrid past, a secret buried as deeply as the bones beneath the floorboards. Uncle Henry, a reclusive man with a dark soul, had once lived in the house with his wife and two children. A sinister pact with the devil, forged in the depths of his despair, had promised him immortality. But the devil, as always, had a cruel twist in store.

The pact had instead brought about a horrific fate for Henry's family. In a fit of madness, he'd murdered them, their lifeless bodies becoming macabre tenants beneath the floorboards of their own home. His quest for eternal life ended abruptly with a self-inflicted gunshot, his body added to the gruesome collection.

As John and his wife, Mary, unloaded the car, their children Emily and Karen explored the overgrown gardens. Emily, only seven, giggled as she chased a butterfly, oblivious to the malevolent presence that seemed to seep from the very walls of the house. Karen, at fifteen, tried to shake off her unease, attributing it to the stress of moving and starting a new school.

The Smith family's first night in the house was marked by an eerie silence, broken only by the creaking of the old house settling. But as John lay awake, staring at the ceiling, he could have sworn he heard the faint sound of children's laughter echoing through the walls. He dismissed it as a trick of the wind, unaware of the horrors that awaited them.
