About this audiobook

Brought to you by Penguin.

We live under an ideology that preys on every aspect of our lives: our education and our jobs; our healthcare and our leisure; our relationships and our mental wellbeing; even the planet we inhabit – the very air we breathe. So pervasive has it become that, for most people, it has no name. It seems unavoidable, like a natural law.

But trace it back to its roots, and we discover that it is neither inevitable nor immutable. It was conceived, propagated, and then concealed by the powerful few. It is time to bring it into the light - and, in doing so, to find an alternative worth fighting for.

Neoliberalism. Do you know what it is?

I've read Monbiot both in books and The Guardian, but this is the first time I've actually heard his voice. It's very easy to understand his accent, and he keeps a very balanced tone throughout (there is one line that I imagine was printed in ALL CAPS that he quasi-shouted, which I laughed out loud at). The pacing and technical aspects of the audiobook were perfect. The contents were also great, though this medium misses out on the citations that are one of the key parts of Monbiot's work: you hear an interesting example and want to check it yourself, but there is no in-app mechanism to follow the citation that surely exists on the page. I don't know if I would listen to future books where I would want to check the citations, but it was a low-effort way to enjoy a good book.
