A baby left on a doorstep that brings two rather surly neighbors together. This is a meet-cute unlike any I’d ever considered before. And I’m not altogether convinced that it fully qualifies under the “cute” portion of that description. Dean and Maribel are a lot like those two porcupines in the old joke: how do porcupines mate – carefully. Maribel is a burnt out social worker who just needs to get away from everything. Dean is a rodeo cowboy forced to retire before he is ready. They are two strangers who discover an abandoned baby. Maribel wants to call the police but Dean wants to give the mother a chance. They bond over the care of the baby while trying to work through their respective pasts and figure out what they want in their future. Thus is a great read in the Charming series.
