He Needed Peace...

Solicitor Tom Finchley has spent his life using his devious intellect to solve the problems of others. As for his own problems, they're nothing that a bit of calculated vengeance can't remedy. But that's all over now. He's finally ready to put the past behind him and settle down to a quiet, uncomplicated life. If only he could find an equally uncomplicated woman.

She Wanted Adventure...

Former lady's companion Jenny Holloway has just been given a modest independence. Now, all she wants is a bit of adventure. A chance to see the world and experience life far outside the restrictive limits of Victorian England. If she can discover the fate of the missing Earl of Castleton while she's at it, so much the better.

From the gaslit streets of London to the lush tea gardens of colonial India, Jenny and Tom embark on an epic quest--and an equally epic romance. But even at the farthest edges of the British Empire, the past has a way of catching up with you...

Awful. I really enjoyed the first book and this one took a crazy turn. The characters are so whiney and dense. The romance is pretty much non-existent and there is nothing endearing about the main characters. the plot is terrible and doesn't make sense. so disappointed if I could give 0 stars I would

After reading The Matrimonjal Advertisement, I definitely had to continue with book #2 from the Parish Orphans of Devon series. Here the fmc Jenny is given a modest sum of money which allows her to travel, hence the title. Continuing their acquaintance from the first book , Mr Lawyer aka Finchley decides to travel with her 😆 and hence we get #forcedproximity (one of my fav tropes!)

Tom and Jenny aided Lady Helena and Justin in The Matrimonial Advertisement. Here is their story. While Jenny is attracted to Tom, she refuses to think of marriage and giving up her new-found freedom and control over her own life. When Tom realizes Jenny must have some feelings for her, he decides to accompany her on her quest to India. He hopes to keep her safe and to use the time to court her in a way. Little descriptions of looks of yearning made my heart ache for Tom, as it must have seemed to him he would not be able to sway Jenny. Their long trip - from London via France, Malta and Egypt to India - is described in some detail. How exhausting the travel must have been.
