"I don't know if I believe in prophecies. I don't know if I believe in her gods or her destiny. I don't know if I believe in any of this. But I believe in her." This book was sensational! It is the first in an ongoing series, and I read this on a whim after one of my reading acquaintances posted about how good it was on social media not long ago. And I have to say, I wasn't disappointed. In fact, this was one of the best high fantasy novels I have read in a while, which was unexpected, yet a welcome and pleasant surprise. This book also gave off so many Studio Ghibli vibes, which I lived for while reading. The narrative follows the stories of North and Nimh, who both come from two different worlds. North is a prince from Alciel, a world suspended up in the clouds in the sky, where they rely on technology for survival. Nimh is her people's chosen goddess and is from Below, where magic flows throughout the land and can be summoned by powerful magicians. These two worlds have existed separately for thousands of years, until one day they collide when North falls out of the sky in a flying shuttle and Nimh finds him. Trapped in a new and scary environment, North teams up with Nimh, whose life mission is to manifest her magical goddess powers and to make a centuries old prophecy come to pass, and believes North has a part to play in it alongside her. Together, Nimh and North go on a life-risking adventure to find North a way back home and to help save Nimh's world from a dangerous magician, who claims to be the true Divine from Below. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something new and different. It has strong world building and dynamic characters that brings the story life up off the page. Co-authored by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner, this series deals with themes of survival, destiny, prophecy, secrecy, and cultural clashes: magic v. technology. I would rate this book 4.5 stars because of the beautiful and complex world building and the strong charcterization.

She’s the author of Hunted and Sherwood and the coauthor of the award-winning Starbound Trilogy (These Broken Stars, This Shattered World, Their Fractured Light) and the Skylark Trilogy (Skylark, Shadowlark, Lark Ascending).
