Christine Pope’s The Arrangement is a novella of the Witches of Cleopatra Hill series. This novella is an interesting concept in that it involves a major plot point already explored in four previous books, namely Dark Angel, Dark Knight, Dark Moon and Spellbound. I was very curious going in to this how the author would work around this. Jacob Wilcox the head, or primus, of the Wilcox clan, lives in 19th century Flagstaff, Arizona. Several years before Jacob’s wife, Nizhoni, had died cursing him and his line so that every wife of the primus would die after giving birth to a son. Having already buried two wives after Nizhoni, Jacob resolved to never marry again. Unfortunately for him, his resolve is to be tested when lovely widow Lorena Simms comes to Flagstaff. Intending to only stay a few days on her journey from New York to San Francisco, Lorena becomes captivated with both Flagstaff and the town’s most prominent citizen. The two of them, each bearing their own secrets, are irresistibly pulled together. But what will they do about the curse? I have to admit by being disappointed by the ending but I really don’t know how else she could have written it and still maintain consistency with the plot previously laid out in this series. This novella left me with both a wistful feeling of what I’d hoped would happen and an admiration of how the author skilfully negotiated around a major plot point already in place. Well worth the read but it would make more sense if the aforementioned books were read first.

Jeremiah Wilcox believes he is destined to forever be alone. After his first wife died in childbirth, every woman he has married since barely makes it out of the first year of marriage before succumbing to illness or accident!!! But when he meets a newcomer to town, a widow herself, he feels that he may just have another chance at love! This is a different kind of HEA! It was truly novel how our couple attempt to elude, deceive and break the curse. Whilst not a HEA that most would see coming, I saw that they decided a little bit of happiness, frequently, over a longer time, beat out a full on HEA with a short date! Set back in 1800's this has a very atmospheric feel to it and was not the time period I would usually pick to read about. Brilliant way to fill in any gaps in your knowledge of the Wilcox clans history.
