The plot and characters are fairly stock whodunnit stuff: brilliant loner detective, uncovering a conspiracy that goes all the way to top, and getting entangled with a feisty young journalist along the way. What sets the book apart is its setting. The attention to detail of the the Orwellian alternate Berlin, particularly the actual historical foundations it rests on, is really impressive.

I read this over 50 years ago and loved it. Brilliant and has, like a good wine, improved with time.

A prime example of how alternative history intrigues the reader, manages to maintain excitement, curiosity and most importantly portrays tragedy to affect the reader. A remarkable read for those who love mystery, crime and military history.
