Mercy is washing the dishes after a family breakfast with her stepdaughter and a female member of the pack, Auriele, when the phone rings. Jesse answers the phone. Her mother, Christy, is calling, and she is frantically asking for Adam, her ex-husband. Christy asks Adam if she can come home because a strange man is stalking her, and she is terrified. Adam tells her to call the police. Mercy can hear Christy’s pleading and tells Adam to let her come, even though she knows she will bring drama into her home.

Later that night, someone knocks on the front door. Mercy tries to wake Adam, but he seems to be under a spell and will not wake up. She grabs her gun and goes to the door. Before opening the door, she asks who is there. The man on the other side tells her that those of his kind do not give their names lightly. This tells Mercy that he is a fae. Fae are supernatural creatures that can change their faces, voices, sizes, and shapes. The man tells her he has been known as Alistair Beauclaire most recently. Mercy knew that Beauclaire was really Gwyn ap Lugh, son of the Gray Lord and ruler of all of the fae. Mercy makes him promise he won’t harm her or anyone else in the house if she lets him in. She asks him what he wants, and he tells her that he wants his father’s walking stick...
