क्रौंचपक्ष्याचे एक जोडपे सुखाने झाडावर प्रणयक्रीडा करीत बसले होते. एका पारध्याने बाणाने त्यातले एक पाखरूमारले. ते मारून खाली पडल्याबरोबर त्याच्या जोडीदारणीने जो आक्रोश केला, तो वाल्मीकी ऋषींच्या हृदयाला जाऊन भिडला. वाल्मीकींचा शोक श्लोकाच्या रूपाने प्रगट झाला. खरी काव्यनिर्मिती अशीच उचंबळून येते. उत्तररामायणातील या काव्याचा आधार घेऊन वि. स. खांडेकरांनी या कादंबरीची निर्मिती केली. अजूनही जगात क्रौंचवध सुरूआहे. दररोज- दर घटकेला- क्रौंचपक्ष्याचे जोडपे हे जगातल्या निष्पाप जीवांचे प्रतीक आहे. जगात क्षणाक्षणाला लाखो निरपराध जीवांची हत्या चालली आहे. पक्ष्यांच्या सुखी जोडप्याला दु:खी करणारा पारधी आणि आजच्या जगातील सत्तांध नेते हे दोघे सारखेच क्रूर आहेत. बुद्धी आणि सत्ता एकत्र आल्याने माणसाच्या सहृदयतेची हत्या झाली आहे. बुद्धीबरोबर माणूस भावनेचा विचार करु लागेल तर हा क्रौंचवध नक्कीच थांबेल. हाच संदेश वि. स. खांडेकर या कादंबरीतून देऊ पाहतात.

Khandekar take four characters to show different aspects of people at that time in society. Whole story revolved around this 4 characters and elaborated each part of their life beautifully. Their views of life is different still they connected to each other. They hate each other for some time but still possess love for each other in deep mind. And grinding between their emotions and their duties towards the society is very staggering.

This book tells us about the real life events in a fantastic way. I love this book . One more master piece from V. S. Khandekar.
