Barnum è stato il fondatore del “più grande spettacolo del mondo”, uno dei più imponenti circhi della storia degli Stati Uniti, dove, a detta del suo istrionico creatore, si esibì anche la ex nutrice di George Washington di 161 anni, oltre a essere esposti la sirena delle isole Fiji, dalla coda lucente, e lo scheletro di Cristoforo Colombo, molto ben conservato. Autore di successo, filantropo, politico, ma anche vittima di cadute e resurrezioni finanziarie, considerato un truffatore, definito ai tempi lo “Shakespeare della pubblicità”, scrisse nel 1880 questo breve manuale per illustrare ai comuni mortali come far soldi, e soprattutto come tenerseli stretti con alcune semplici regole tra cui non seguire la vocazione sbagliata, essere sistematici, leggere i giornali, usare gli strumenti migliori e preservare la propria integrità.
