Interesting and entertaining characters. The fact that they are shifters makes the story really grab you from the beginning. It's interesting how this type of storyline works. Very creative. There are lots of unexpected twists in the story with plenty of drama. The past romance is never easy. Good read. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

A Bad Paranormal Regency Story from a Normally Excellent Author I've read this author for years, and I so enjoy her stories based on world mythology and reworked fairy tales. I was very intrigued to see she had started a series based in the Regency Era but about a shifter society that exists at and parallels “regular” society. I've seen some other authors write paranormal Regencies—and have enjoyed them—so I was eager to dive into such a book by an author who has some very serious paranormal fiction writing chops. Unfortunately, I was so disappointed in the book I didn't finish it. It was just so incredibly poorly done, at least for this long-time Regency lover. The book came across as if written by someone who had no real clue about actual Regency times or Regency books as written by contemporaneous or modern authors. Instead, it seems like she watched "Bridgerton" a few times and read a few blogs about some mistakes made in it (like the court dresses) and then just wrote as if she were simply writing a paranormal book. It had no elevated language that all good historical fiction should have. Even worse, the book had many modern phrases that would not have existed during Regency times. She had no sense of the manners of the day and—though mentioned A LOT—or what true propriety was back then. The errors nearly made me growl until I just gave up. I liked the shifter world she built, which was in some ways parallel to the non-shifter Regency world, but the Regency errors and the poorly chosen word just made this book horrific for a decades-long Regency romance lover to read. This is supposed to be the start of a series, and I sincerely hope that, if the author continues, she will do a bit more research into Regency times (as she has done with so many ancient mythologies!) and into the key elements of a good Regency book. I don't think I've ever been so disappointed by this author before and hope not to be again. I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review, obviously!

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Victoria and Edmund were childhood friends and during her first season, they become closer. When a less than suitable suitor tries to force her to be his wife, Edmund makes his intentions known and claims Victoria as his wife. The path to their marriage would have been disastrous normally but with both wanting it and with her family's support, it worked out more than fine.
