राजकारणमुत्सद्दी नाना फडणीस आणि समशेरबहाद्दर महादजी शिंदे हे पेशवाईच्या काळातील कर्तबगार पुरुष होते. खरेतर या दोघांच्या कार्य-कर्तृत्वामुळेच संपूर्ण हिंदुस्थानात मराठे प्रबळ झाले व मराठेशाही कळसाला पोहोचली! या दोघांनी केवळ राष्ट्रहिताकरिता वैयक्तिक मतभेद, महत्त्वाकांक्षा बाजूला ठेवून बजावलेल्या संयुक्त कामगिरीला उजाळा देणारी कादंबरी! अर्थात, या दोघांची राजकीय कारकीर्द सुमारे पन्नास वर्षांइतकी प्रदीर्घ असल्याने, ही केवळ त्यांच्या कामगिरीची झलक म्हणावी लागेल. कारण या कादंबरीमध्ये सन १७७२ ते १७८४ असा एका तपाचाच काळ आला आहे.
