In 1930s New Zealand, stability and contentment are hard won, especially for a young wife and mother. When Alice Simpson agrees to move to a sheep farm on a windswept peninsula with her husband and children, the lack of a house, electricity, and a decent road weren’t quite what she expected.
As she struggles to adapt to the hardships and isolation, Alice relies on the exchange of letters with her sister to raise her spirits. While the beauty of her surroundings seeps into her soul, she encounters an intriguing assortment of animals and characters who bring colour to her days.
But just as a sense of contentment creeps into her life, calamity strikes and long kept secrets begin to unravel ...

Born and raised in New Zealand, the highlight of Heather’s childhood was the family sheep and cattle farm just north of Auckland. With reading and writing a big part of family life, she dreamed of becoming a writer, however work, travel and raising a family consumed many years after she settled in Queensland with her Australian husband. Her love and knowledge of farming life was strengthened with thirty plus years of living on the land in Queensland’s Darling Downs. Now retired and living in Highfields, QLD, with her husband, dogs and chooks, Heather is finally able to fulfil her dream of writing. When not busy writing, Heather is in their large garden, minding her grandchildren, or bush walking and exploring the vast beauty of Australia and New Zealand.
