इतिहास में सम्राट् अशोक को दो चीजों के लिए याद किया जाता है—एक, कलिंग के युद्ध के लिए और दूसरा, भारत के बाहर की दुनिया में बौद्ध धर्म के प्रचार-प्रसार के लिए। अपने आरंभिक दिनों में अशोक बहुत क्रूर राजा था। अपने निष्कंटक राज्य के लिए उसने अपने सौतेले भाइयों को मरवा दिया था। उसके इन क्रूर कारनामों के कारण उसे ‘चंड अशोक’ कहा जाने लगा था। उसने एक के बाद एक राज्य जीता और साम्राज्यवाद की अपनी महत्त्वाकांक्षा को सींचता रहा। उसका राज्य भारत के पार दक्षिण एशिया और पर्शिया तक को छूने लगा।
आखिर कलिंग का युद्ध हुआ। इसमें भी अशोक को जीत मिली। लेकिन इस युद्ध में दोनों पक्षों के एक-एक लाख लोग मारे गए और इससे भी ज्यादा बेघर हो गए। कलिंग युद्ध में हुए महाविनाश से विचलित हो गया। उसने बौद्ध धर्म ग्रहण कर लिया। उसने जनकल्याण के कार्य आरंभ कर दिए और राजसी भोग-विलास का परित्याग कर दिया। उसने अपने पुत्र महेंद्र और पुत्री संघमित्रा को बौद्ध धर्म के प्रचार-प्रसार के लिए समर्पित कर दिया।
सम्राट् अशोक के शौर्य, युद्धकौशल विजय अभियानों और दानव से मानव बनने की मार्मिक कथा प्रस्तुत करनेवाली एक पठनीय पुस्तक।
