This book was so irritating. I seriously did not understand why the 2 main characters took the abuse they did and did not do more to defend themselves. It made me so angry that they just wanted to take the "high road" and not be embarrassed cause family problems. I would have given more stars if not for how long this dragged out.

First Instinct is book one in the Northstar Book series by Suzie O’Connell. I thought it was very well written. Beth Carlyle is a dedicated college student. When her boyfriend grows violent and rapes her, her world is shattered. Nick Hammond has been Beth’s best friend ever since childhood. When he tries to defend Beth, his world is also shaken. What will happen to the two friends and can there ever be more between them after such violence? This book is definitely a page turner. For any reader who may have lived through sexual assault, this book might be too difficult. The scene described is explicit and hard to read through. But Beth discovers that she is stronger than she realized. A very powerful story...

Beautifully written. The rape experience and character development were handled with insight and sensitivity. However the book dragged on for just a bit too long

About the author

Suzie O’Connell is the USA TODAY bestselling author of the Northstar romances. The series is the product of a love affair with Southwestern Montana that began with a two-week adventure at her stepsister’s rustic cabin in her teens. That love affair shows no sign of abating.

She has been writing stories for as long as she can remember, and her love of writing and of Montana pushed her to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Literature and Writing from the University of Montana-Western. What else would you expect from a self-professed mountain-loving nerd?

When she isn’t writing, you’ll probably find Suzie in the mountains with a camera in hand and enjoying the beauty of Montana with her husband Mark, their daughter Maddie, and their golden retriever Reilly.
