Saat ini, koperasi syariah mengendalikan sebagian besar usaha mikro, kecil dan menengah (UMKM) yang sedang naik daun di Indonesia. Keberadaan koperasi syariah sebenarnya masih bisa dioptimalkan jika hambatan dalam hal strategi dan permodalan bisa diatasi. Kementerian Koperasi dan UKM mencatat, hingga akhir Desember 2019 jumlah koperasi syariah atau Koperasi Simpan Pinjam dan Pembiayaan Syariah (KSPPS) di Indonesia ada sekitar 4.046 unit dari seluruh jumlah Koperasi Simpan Pinjam (KSP) sebanyak 16.549 unit. Sebagai negara dengan jumlah penduduk muslim terbesar dunia, seharusnya Indonesia dapat mengembangkan koperasi syariah.
