Elizabeth von Arnim (1866-1941), born Mary Annette Beauchamp, was an Australian-born British novelist. Von Arnim enjoyed a significant degree of literary success in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her oeuvre is characterized by its wit, irony, and keen observation of societal norms and the roles of women during her time. One of her well-known works, 'The Benefactress' (1901), explores themes of female independence and empowerment through its protagonist, Anna Estcourt, who unexpectedly inherits a large estate and dedicates her life to helping less fortunate women.
