Vannamei Culture in Biofloc: An Approach is a comprehensive guide that delves into the science and practice of farming Vannamei shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) using biofloc technology. This method has revolutionized shrimp aquaculture, particularly in regions like Indonesia, by providing an efficient, sustainable way to address some of the major challenges in shrimp farming. With a rising demand for shrimp in both local and international markets, this eBook is an invaluable resource for farmers, researchers, and students interested in innovative and eco-friendly shrimp culture techniques.

The eBook begins by introducing the basics of Vannamei shrimp biology and the biofloc technology itself. It explains how biofloc systems leverage microorganisms to convert organic waste into a supplemental feed source for shrimp, significantly reducing operational costs such as feed. Moreover, biofloc technology allows for better water quality management, reducing the frequency of water changes and minimizing environmental impact. The book systematically guides readers from the biological fundamentals of shrimp to the technical application of biofloc systems.

One of the strengths of this book is its focus on practical applications. Drawing from both scientific literature and field experiences, the authors provide detailed guidance on how to set up, manage, and maintain biofloc systems. Key topics include tank preparation, water management, microbial dynamics, and the proper handling of biofloc media. This structure ensures that farmers, whether novices or experienced practitioners, can apply biofloc technology effectively to optimize shrimp growth and health.

The authors also cover the critical aspects of feed and nutrition management, particularly how biofloc serves as a supplemental feed source that can reduce reliance on commercial feed. Additionally, the book discusses shrimp health, disease prevention, and how the biofloc system naturally promotes stronger, healthier shrimp by improving immunity and reducing disease outbreaks. These insights are vital for shrimp farmers aiming for both higher productivity and sustainable practices.

Further, the eBook explores the economic and environmental potential of biofloc technology. It outlines how farmers can maximize profits by reducing feed costs and increasing stocking densities without sacrificing shrimp health or environmental quality. By using biofloc systems, farmers can contribute to more sustainable shrimp farming, addressing both the economic challenges and the environmental concerns associated with conventional aquaculture methods.

Overall, Vannamei Culture in Biofloc: An Approach serves as an essential reference for those involved in the shrimp aquaculture industry. Its blend of scientific theory and practical instruction offers a clear path to more efficient and sustainable shrimp farming. Whether for academic purposes or field application, this book is a valuable tool for advancing biofloc-based aquaculture, helping farmers achieve higher yields while preserving water resources and minimizing environmental impact.

लेखकाविषयी

Adi Sucipto is a PhD (meaning still poor, hungry, and determined), a former civil servant, and an aquaculture practitioner with over 25 years of experience in fish farming. Despite achieving numerous accomplishments in his career, Adi remains humble, describing himself as "poor, hungry, and determined" in his pursuit of knowledge and ongoing contributions to the advancement of aquaculture in Indonesia.

Adi's career journey began in high school when he wrote his first paper on fish farming using the longyam system in 1990. Since then, he has continuously engaged in research and development in aquaculture, covering several major projects:

1993-1995: Conducted thesis research on tetraploidization in red tilapia, marking the beginning of his advanced studies in aquaculture.

1995-1996: Completed a second thesis on the karyotype of red tilapia.

1996-1997: Contributed to red tilapia breeding research, playing an important role in the development of superior strains.

1998-2001: Developed tilapia hybridization, producing promising hybrids for freshwater fish farming.

2002-2005: Led the mass production program for male tilapia, which culminated in the release of the GESIT tilapia strain in 2007.

2006-2007: Deepened his knowledge in Aquatic Science, expanding his understanding of aquatic ecosystems and aquaculture.

2008-2009: Engaged in transgenic research through microinjection techniques on fish.

2009-2014: Focused on marker-assisted selection in carp, which later produced a disease-resistant carp strain named "Mantap" in 2015.

2015-2016: Continued marker-assisted selection research on other carp strains, as well as the development of synthetic base populations in Nilem fish.

2017-2020: Supported the development of biofloc technology in various regions of Indonesia, particularly in catfish and tilapia farming.

2013/2014 and 2020: Researched enzymatic processes in catfish larvae, which were later applied in the book Pembenihan Ikan Lele Berbasis Bioflok Tanpa Cacing.

Outside of his work in aquaculture, Adi has been running a family trading business since 2013. In his spare time, he enjoys writing and has published several important books on aquaculture, including:

Pembesaran Nila Merah Bangkok (2005)

Pembesaran Nila 2,5 Bulan (2009), co-authored with Prof. Dr. Odang Carman

Teknologi Bioflok dalam Budidaya Ikan Nila (2020)

Pembenihan Ikan Lele Berbasis Bioflok Tanpa Cacing (2024), co-authored with Rafif Muhammad

Biofloc in Tilapia: An Approach (2024)
