The ninth book in the epic and bestselling series that has gripped millions.A hero will be forged from this broken land.

As seen on Netflix and BBC around the world.

A fragile peace is about to be broken...

King Alfred’s son Edward and formidable daughter, Æthelflaed, rule Wessex, Mercia and East Anglia. But all around the restless Northmen, eyeing the rich lands and wealthy churches, are mounting raids.

Uhtred of Bebbanburg, the kingdoms’ greatest warrior, controls northern Mercia from the strongly fortified city of Chester. But forces are rising up against him. Northmen allied to the Irish, led by the fierce warrior Ragnall Ivarson, are soon joined by the Northumbrians, and their strength could prove overwhelming. Despite the gathering threat, both Edward and Æthelflaed are reluctant to move out of the safety of their fortifications. But with Uhtred’s own daughter married to Ivarson’s brother, who can be trusted?

In the struggle between family and loyalty, between personal ambition and political commitment, there will be no easy path. But a man with a warrior’s courage may be able to find it. Such a man is Uhtred, and this may be his finest hour.

Loved the whole series. I feel cheated that this is the last book because Uhtred hasn't achieved what I thought he would. Can't add more because I don't want to spoil it for others. This ending seemed hasty and unfinished, and I'm left with unanswered questions and some lost threads of characters who just seem to disappear and be forgotten. I would certainly read more books by Bernard Cornwell

Love this series and looking forward to seeing The Last Kingdom on BBC2. I enjoyed this book and didn't want to put it down. As much as I enjoy the action I also found myself chuckling at some points as Uhtred riles the priests. My only complaint and the reason for 4 stars rather than 5 is that it is a bit too short and a felt little rushed and I felt that £12 was little expensive for an ebook that has less than 300 pages

Enjoyed it overall, but there is a lot of repetition and harking back to previous novels. Also the historical context appears much diluted. There is a need to refresh the series
