About this ebook

On the precipice of change … Just not the way he’d expected …

Kerrick is tagged to join a new elite group, where he’d have more say and less rules on missions. Working mostly alone, he’s to track down a kidnapped victim suspected of being in England, and likely she’s not the only one. This is his kind of job; finding out a longtime friend is his backup makes this mission a go.

Amanda is snatched at the end of her workday while walking to her vehicle. Days later she wakes to find she’s imprisoned, alone in a small cement cell. One rotting meal a day is provided, and that is it. Once she realizes someone else is here–a young boy—she’s even more determined to escape. And to take him with her. Running into Kerrick wasn’t the plan …

Escaping is only one part of the puzzle as the truth drags them to Europe and beyond as they sort out how the two kidnappings are related, who’s behind it all and why … Before they are run aground and imprisoned all over again …

Kerrick has been a Navy Seal long enough to know he needed more at this point in his life. Once he embraced the regulation of the service especially after losing his wife and daughter to an accident years ago but now at 34 years of age, he was ready for a change. This change was offered by a covert black ops team ready to protect with different rules. The call came from a friend who offered this change and in the course of the conversation Kerrick called him a bit of a maverick. The friend liked the word "Maverick" and it stayed as an ID for this newly forming organization. So Kerrick accepted this challenge and soon was off to England to save the kidnapped girl---well, woman, Dr. Amanda Berg and also (unknown to Kerrick) the boy she had saved from another cell in the prison. Amanda and Brandon were escaping when Kerrick arrived. Apparently Amanda had multiple people who might want her kidnapped including her dad's enemies, the research lab where she worked making great advances in cancer research and her ex-husband who had signed a prenup and got nothing in their divorce. Brandon had issues as well. So Kerrick was off to find Amanda which was no small task, rescue her and find answers to the kidnapping to keep her safe. There was also the matter of Brandon who was only 10 years old but a member of Mensa as was Amanda. Griffin (a member of "Maverick") joined Kerrick at the prison for the escape. The banter among these people is absolutely priceless. There is no lack of adventure in both the escape from prison and the need to survive and the battle to find answers afterwards. I don't want to say more for fear of giving away too much. Great start to a new series that I'm ready to follow.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and I also purchased a copy. This is a great start to a new series. This is a home run. I was glued to my e-reader right from the beginning. Ms. Mayer has a gift of story-telling that completely enchants me. This story is about Kerrick. He is at a cross-roads in his life. His career in the Navy is almost over and he doesn't know what to do with his skills-set. He receives a mysterious message to meet at a bar close to the base. Kerrick is given an assignment to rescue a kidnapped scientist. The job is mysterious in the fact that Kerrick is given a burner phone and very few details. He will have to learn on the fly. In fact, it is Kerrick who names the black ops group, The Mavericks. Dr. Amanda Berg is on the cusp of curing cancer. She is kidnapped outside of her lab in Paris, France. She is held hostage with very little food or drink. She suspects the meal is even drugged. She eats enough to keep her mind sharp so she can escape when given the opportunity. Not all into her confinement, she discovers there could be even more people there. She communicates with a young boy that is being held above her in Morse Code. The ten year old is a Mansa just like herself. The escape and rescue of Amanda and Brandon, the ten year old, is one that had me holding my breath at times. Keeping ahead of the kidnappers while trying to discover the link between the two kidnappings is one that kept me glued to my e-reader. I adored the dual POV format of this book. Seeing into the characters' mind really shows where the attraction between the two characters lay, at least in the beginning. Because of the suspense and intrigue there is just so much action going on that the two characters don't act upon the attraction in the beginning. There is one sexy scene but it was written in such a manner that it should not offend anyone. That being said though, I would highly recommend this story to anyone who loves intrigue and mystery with their romance.

This is the start of yet another action packed military romance series from Dale Mayer. Kerrick Cassidy has reached a crossroads in his life, his wife and child had been killed in a car accident a few years before , he had been a highly decorated navy SEAL but his time with his team was coming to an end. He is unsure what direction his life is going to take when he receives a mysterious text message from a guy that he had known a long time ago and who he had heard had joined the military. Kerrick had loved his time in the navy but had become disillusioned with all the red tape and restrictions. The text message asked for a meeting and Kerrick was to learn of a US Government funded maverick team of black opp operators who worked alone or in very small teams, usually two members and with very few restrictions, any help, information or anything else required was asked for and given via a chat window on a computer from the nameless employer. Kerrick was offered a job and decided to give it a try. Dr Amanda Berg, a research scientist who was on the verge of discovering a cure for cancer, was kidnapped in France and taken to England, she was held in a concrete cell with only a cot, a thin blanket, a chamber pot and very little food. Amanda's father had requested help to find her. In another cell was a twelve year old boy, Brandon Coleman, who had a very high Mensa IQ and who managed to converse with Amanda using Morse code. Amanda manages to escape taking Brandon with her. Was someone trying to steal Amanda's research ?, was she up for ransom ?, was Brandon's father involved ? Here the story and the action begin and Kerrick has Griffin to back him. This book contains action, kidnapping, corruption, trafficking of body parts and of course romance, the author is to be recommended for her military knowledge This is a standalone book but the epilogue gently leads to the next story and I can't wait to read it. I predict that this series will be another runaway success for Dale Mayer. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
